As we all know we survive off of the food that we eat. Most of us rely on our markets and grocery stores to provide us with our food but what happens if those places shut down? Do you know how to grow produce? or at least know your local farmers that you can purchase from? We all were in for a rude awakening March of 2020 when covid swept the nation and threatened our food security causing everyone to panic. We stocked up on food with the fear of the unknown caused by the shutdown. But would we have been in such frenzy if we had our own food supply? It taught me if you stay ready you won't have to get ready.
Last August, 2021 I had the pleasure of chopping it up with a local farmer of Stone Mountain Georgia, Monica of Keeyah Gardens. I met Monica at a local food vending event and I saw her passion for gardening so I wanted to pick her brain and learn a little bit more about farming as well as see all the produce she has in her garden. Upon arriving I saw all of the beautiful flowers including sunflowers she had blossoming in the farm. As she gave me the tour It was amazing to see the range of produce planted by one person. Eggplants, okra, and squash are just a few vegetables found in Keeyah Gardens. I also had a pleasure of trying a fresh string bean straight off the vine.
One thing I know is that even if you yourself do not wish to start your own farm, or gardening is not your thing, it is important to know where to find local farmers in times of need. Not only does it take us away from being reliable on large corporations, its a lot healthier to source locally and it also helps circulate our dollar to our local farmers so they can continue farming.
You can catch Keeyah Gardens at their next farmers market event in the Atlanta area. Make sure to follow her on insfagram @keeyahgardens

As you all know I started my vegan journey about a year and a half ago. I like many vegans, was so intrigued by the lifestyle and the promoted health benefits that come along with it. I also felt like it was the best thing to do due to the rise of Covid-19. I wanted to take control of my health and give myself the best possible outcome if the virus ever came my way. I was also always in aww about the shinny glowing skin I'd see most vegans have. Although I thought I did thorough research, never did I think to look at the opposite end of the spectrum. Always looking at the benefits but never the potential dangers of veganism.
A couple months ago I started to seriously crave salmon. I would "sneak" salmon and felt terribly guilty about it. Especially since I was promoting the vegan lifestyle. Luckily I came across a woman by the name of Jonnelle Maria who shares her vegan experience that almost cost her her life. It made me feel better about my cravings because I realized it was my body telling me what I needed.
Jonnelle was vegan for about six years until she started experiencing health problems that made her revert back to eating meat. Problems such as teeth sensitivity, hair loss, and being too skinny due to malnourishment. The purpose of this conversation is not to convince you to not be vegan but to give you a well rounded perspective of some possible outcomes if you do choose to go this route. To all those who don't agree or have a problem with what is said, isn't it better to know about the dangers than not to know? At the end of the day this is somebodies journey and somebodies truth. To be aware allows you to pay detailed attention to yourself and your daily health. It also will allow you to dig deeper into other potential ways of living. You do not have to be vegan to be healthy, spiritual, or closer to God.
Here are some photos of Jonnelle while on a vegan diet.
Here is after incorporating meat in her diet
As a leader I commend her for speaking out on this subject especially after she was pushing veganism . It’s not always easy to go against what you once thought was right. Especially against a community whose beliefs are so strong like the vegan community that can sometimes feel like a cult and can be extremely judgmental.
Make sure to follow her on Instagram @jonnellemaria . As well as her YouTube where she’ll be continuing her series of interviewing ex vegans to share their stories.
In this live We spoke about her book “The Vegan Trap” , as well as her self help book that helps you track your daily health . Jonnelle also helps people build their business credit ! So make sure to hit her up

]]>Summer is here and so is the heat. What's a better way to cool down than to enjoy a healthy all natural cold pressed juice? On this episode of Slicin with Dice, Dice chops it up with "Bliss Lifestyle and Fitness" trainer and owner of "Just Be Fresh" cold pressed juices Diamond Baird. They try her summer flavor "Hussle Blue" over a vegan po boy from Detroit Vegan Soul.
Diamond started off and is still currently a personal trainer. She says she created Bliss Lifestyle and Fitness as a way to bring health to her family and her community due to the loss of some close family and friends because of health issues. She recognized the lack of health awareness and wanted to bring change to her environment and culture. Bliss Lifestyle and Fitness focuses on strength and conditioning and she offers one on one, group, and zoom training with routines that yields results and caters to your body and goals. Be on the look out for her next fitness classes such as: trampoline toning class, and her Finally Fit Bootcamp sponsored by Under Armour.
"Just be Fresh" is Diamonds line of cold press juices. With three signature flavors, she also introduced seasonal collections. I tried her 'Hussle Blue" which is apart of her summer collection. It had a sweet lemonade flavor that was so refreshing. It was also nice knowing that you can enjoy a sweet drink without added chemicals and processed sugar. Diamond says that she didn't initially plan on making a business out of her juices. At first it was something her friends would ask her to make and was just a side hustle. But with the rise of Corona Virus she found that it was important to push a healthy product geared towards boosting peoples immune system. Especially in a place like Detroit where healthy options are not easily accessible. You can catch Just Be Fresh in Bee's Beauty Bar in Southfield, Michigan and be on the lookout for their next pop up event.
